Tibet Watch is recruiting a human rights researcher to conduct interviews and to monitor and analyse news and information from Tibet.

One of the main roles of the researcher will be to monitor the situation in Yushu County follwowing the earthquake on 14 April 2010. Human rights monitoring is crucial in any emergency response especially in occupied Tibet.

As the humanitarian response moves from saving life to longer term development the needs of the Tibetan people must be prioritised. The earthquake will mean huge sums of money will be invested in redeveloping the area. It is vital that Tibetans have equal access to any opportunities these funds create, including employment. As new infrastructure is built, including homes, schools and hospitals should reflect the Tibetan identity of Yushu.

Ideally the researcher will be based in Dharamsala, although other locations will be considered. S/he will monitor the situation by conducting interviews and by gathering and analysing news and information from Tibet, by using personal contacts as well as the internet.

The candidate will come from or around Yushu County with a wide network of contacts in the area. S/he must have strong interpersonal, communication and networking skills, ability to utilise the web for information-gathering and will need to be able to demonstrate initiative. The candidate must have excellent written and spoken Tibetan. Good spoken and/or written English is also an asset.

Tibet Watch is a UK registered charity promoting the human rights of the Tibetan people by providing accurate information about the situation in Tibet, for the purpose of international advocacy and awareness-raising. Through collaboration with London-based staff, recent projects have included briefings to international media and a submission to the United Nations Committee against Torture.
